Why Your Laptop Is Slow, Hot or Acting Up (and What to Do About It)
Most computer problems give warning signs long before they fail. Catch them early and you'll save money, and maybe your files.

- Back up your files today. Use an external drive or a cloud service. A failing drive gives little warning, and recovery is never guaranteed.
- Keep the vents clear. Laptops on beds, blankets and laps choke on their own heat. Use them on a hard surface, and have dust cleaned out every year or two.
- Pay attention to new noises. Grinding, clicking or a fan that runs loud all the time usually means something needs attention.
- Restart once in a while. Many slowdowns and glitches clear up with a full restart, and updates often need one to finish installing.
- Watch what you install. Free programs, pop-ups claiming your computer is infected, and "speed up your PC" tools are common sources of slowdowns and scams.
- Never let a stranger remote into your computer. Real tech companies don't call you out of the blue. If someone has already connected, shut the computer down and call us.
- Spilled something? Power off and unplug. Don't turn it back on to check. Flip a laptop upside down, take out the battery if you can, and bring it in.
