Keeping the Family iPad (and Every Other Tablet) Alive
Tablets live a harder life than phones. They get passed around, carried by kids, left on couches and charged on the floor. A few habits go a long way.

- Get a real case, especially for kids. A thick foam or rugged case with a built-in stand absorbs drops far better than a thin folio cover.
- Add a screen protector. Tablet glass is large and expensive. A tempered glass protector is cheap insurance.
- Don't charge it under a pillow or blanket. Heat is hard on batteries. Charge on a hard, flat surface with some airflow.
- Be gentle with the charging cable. Yanking the cord out at an angle, or using the tablet while it's plugged in on someone's lap, wears out the charging port.
- Keep drinks away. Tablets on the kitchen table or couch arm are an easy target for spilled juice and coffee.
- Don't ignore a lifting screen. If the glass starts separating from the frame, the battery may be swelling. Stop using it and bring it in.
- Back it up and set a passcode. Kids' tablets often hold years of photos and videos that only live on that device.
